Pathogenic micro-organisms

Bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms that can cause illness — for example Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli (STEC), norovirus or hepatitis A. They are the most common reason for food alerts in the EU.

What it can cause

Symptoms range from diarrhoea, vomiting and fever to severe illness. Listeria is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, for newborns, older people and anyone with a weakened immune system.

What to do

Do not eat the product from the batch named in the alert. Wash hands and surfaces that were in contact with it. Contact a doctor if you have a high fever, bloody diarrhoea or signs of dehydration.
